July 1 is the national day of Canada. A federal statutory holiday, it celebrates the anniversary of July 1, 1867, the effective date of the Constitution Act, which united the three separate colonies of the Province of Canada, Nova Scotia, and New Brunswick into a single Dominion within the British Empire called Canada. Originally called Dominion Day, the holiday was renamed in 1982, the year the Canada Act was passed.

We might not be able to celebrate together this year, but at least we have the technology to see our family and friends virtually (hello Skype and Zoom!) so we can all still have fun. If you’re not feeling the festive spirit, why not throw together your best white and red outfit, get outside and have a socially distanced BBQ with your neighbours? Today is also the day that you’re allowed to eat as many pancakes and maple syrup as you want, and I think we all need that right now!

Canada Day also coincides with Moving Day in Quebec, but whether that goes ahead this year is another matter. For those who are moving, you may be interested in a mortgage from K5 Mortgage or somewhere comparable to help the home-buying process go more smoothly. Moving is stressful enough as it is without a global pandemic going on, so any way that you can make the day go off without a hitch is a win!

So, once all your zoom calls are done, you’ve eaten as many pancakes as you can and you’re all settled into your new home, it’s time to let the fireworks fly! Fireworks are a great way to round of this year’s Canada Day – a firework show is outside so there’s less chance of the virus spreading, and they bring light to these dark times. Stay safe and have fun!
